The official 2025 Shetland Wool Week pattern has been revealed—and it’s a beauty. Designed by Rachel Hunter of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers, the Aal Ower Toorie is a vibrant, vintage-inspired Fair Isle hat that pays tribute to 1930s Shetland knitwear. I’m completely in love with the design—and I’ve already preordered my kit from The Woolly Thistle.
This is the exact kit I’ll be using to knit mine, and I’d love for you to cast on with me!
About the Pattern: Aal Ower Toorie
The name “Aal Ower” refers to the continuous allover motif used in the hat—a classic Fair Isle design element—while “Toorie” is a Shetland word for a hat or pom-pom. The pattern is a nod to history and community, inspired by photographs from Chris Morphet’s Allover exhibition at the Shetland Museum, and by charts from the Guild’s own publication, A Shetlander's Fair Isle Graph Book.
It’s a beautiful blend of old and new, rich in meaning and color.
